Biodiversity and Sustainable Coffee Production
RTRS’ location within a working coffee farm surrounded by tropical forest permits the exploration of biodiversity issues associated with coffee production.
The RTRS site is approximately 4 miles north of 12,500-acre Tapanti National Park in the Pacific La Amistad Conservation area of Costa Rica. There is strong communality of animal species between the Park and RTRS.
The overall property is a hilly valley (1230- 1400m) in the morning shadow of Cerro Duan mountain. The backland has older mature trees and typical cloud forest vegetation. The mountainside contains ephemeral waterfalls and bare rock faces.
The entire property frontage is maintained as shade-covered coffee with 7,000 coffee trees (Arabica); an area of approximately 5 hectares. Above the coffee fields lie 15-year regenerating cloud forests as the elevation increases.
